To be granted refugee status means to be accepted as one's true self...

Trudy, Carlos, Jennifer, Zaki, Alvaro all identify themselves LGBT and have fled their home countries to seek asylum in Canada. As they await determination of their applications for refugee status, they struggle to fit in to life in a new society and also live with the constant fear that they will be forced to return to a life of prejudice and persecution.

But they know that if they are recognized and granted refugee status it would be a great turning point in their lives.

Last Chance is a film focusing on people from sexual minorities and their journey of finding a place of acceptance.

Introducing -

Trudy: A Jamaican lesbian who has been the victim of correctional rape. Leaving her painful past behind, She comes to Canada with the hope that she will be able to start a new life.

Carlos: Despite knowing he was gay Carlos hid his sexuality and married, and was eventually blessed with a son. But fearing for the safety of his son in Colombia, a land filled with prejudice against gays, Carlos escapes to Canada seeking refuge and safety.

Jennifer: A transgender woman from Lebanon rejected by her family and community. Jennifer realizes that she cannot continue to live in a place where she cannot be herself and makes the decision to escape.

Zaki: A young man from Egypt who suffers from the memories of the days where he was imprisoned and tortured for being gay.

Alvaro: As a teenager Alvaro left his home country of Nicaragua on foot, travelling illegally through Mexico and the U.S. until finally reaching Canada. Though he has now lived in Canada for some time, the constant fear of deportation hangs over what limited happiness he has.

But these five are not alone in their fight for the freedom to be themselves. Friends, human rights activist groups, social workers, lawyers... many people are supporting them to continue fighting for their rights.

"I want to be recognized that I am a human being and be accepted for who I am"

Will Canada help these people who fight for such basic rights?

LGBT stands for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender. Many people have been the subject of discrimination for their sexuality and gender identity, and suffer in various ways throughout the world.

Will you accept the person next to you for who they are, rather than who they ought to be?

Questioning the concept of identity, the film asks what it is that makes a tolerant society accepting of people regardless of "who" they are.
