Monsieur Lazhar was nominated for an Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film at the 84th Academy Awards® and has received several other awards.

In Montreal, an elementary school teacher commits suicide. While his students remain in shock, Bachir Lazhar, a middle-aged man from Algeria, is hired by the school to replace their former teacher. The cultural gap between Lazhar and the students is immediately apparent, yet with his sincerity and warm heart he gradually builds a connection with the children. Meanwhile, Lazhar's reason for abandoning his home country remains a mystery.

Mohamed Said Fellag, himself once an Algerian asylum seeker, is highly effective in his portrayal of Lazhar.
