Mirte is cleaner at the reception center for asylum seekers at Schiphol Airport in Holland. She despairs of life, mourning the death of her husband and keeping her son at a distance. However, one day she meets Luc, an asylum seeker from Africa. Thanks to him she gradually learns to open her heart. But the man who gives her comfort, who is he? Why has he fled from his homeland?
THE NEW WORLD tells the story happened between Mirte and Luc, portraying sensitively their fragile relationship.

The film has had a positive reception, first shown at the Melbourne International Film Festival, it was awarded the European's Prize at the Millennium International Documentary Film Festival.
