During the early 1990s, the rise of nationalism and democratisation protests in Bhutan led the exodus of 106,000 ethnic Nepalese from Bhutan. These refugees reside in seven camps located in South-East Nepal. The UNHCR works with local governments and NGOs in supporting these camps, one of which is Damak.
In April 2007, Japanese volleyball Gold Medallists from the 1976 Montreal Olympics travelled to Damak Refugee Camp. Although setting out as instructors, what was it that the refugee children taught the Olympians?
