24 June, Goethe-Institute, Fighting the Silence: Special Speaker from Doctors of the World

Introductory words before the screening of the Fighting The Silence

Prune Helfter, Medecins du Monde Japon, General Manager

The international NGO Medecins du Monde (Doctors of the World) has been providing free access to healthcare to refugees as well as illegal migrants living in Rabat since July 2006. Mostly staying in slums, those migrants have fled their home-country in Subsaharan Africa in a desperate attempt to escape from poverty or political repression.

With 20 million people under-nourished and 4 million deaths caused by a civil war that started in 1996, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is suffering from the worst humanitarian crisis since World War II. The international NGO Medecins du Monde (Doctors of the World) has been implementing medical care projects in the country since 1994. The organization is currently running missions in Goma (HIV project), in Kinshasa (street children care), in Kalemie (fight against epidemics) and in Bahoruco (access to healthcare).

Medecins du Monde Japon is a global health non-profit organization founded in Japan in 1995, whose volunteers provide medical care to vulnerable populations around the world. It operates within a network of 16 representative offices and delegations. Medecins du Monde builds long-term solutions to urgent health crises with a particular focus on women’s health, vulnerable children, HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment, and migrants.

Prune Helfter is the General Manager of the Japanese branch of the international NGO Medecins du Monde. Prune graduated from the Paris Institute of Political Science, Essec Business School and the National Institute of Oriental Languages and Civilizations. Prune holds a PhD in Economics and is also a former research student at Kyoto University.
