South Sudan became the newest country in the world when it gained its independence in July 2011, after years of conflict over religions, ethnicities and various other reasons.

On one hand many people who fled during the conflict start to return to rebuild their country; on the other hand, a bitter and dangerous armed conflict is raging at the border of Sudan and South Sudan forcing residents to flee their homes in search for safety.

Delivery of aid to these people in need has been extremely difficult for various reasons such as road blockages preventing access to refugee camps. Children who have fled to these camps are in particular danger as the risk of malnutrition and possibility of death becomes more real.

UNHCR is carrying out emergency relief efforts in response to these humanitarian emergencies in the region.
