Our story starts in the slums of Guatemala.

Sara stared into the mirror at her reflection. Instead of the usual familiar face, staring back at her was young girl cutting her beautiful black hair with serious and unwavering determination.

With farewells only said in their thoughts, two teenagers Juan and Sara depart their home town in silence with one destination in mind; north, further, and further.  It's a dangerous and life-threatening journey, but seemingly forgotten in their innocent smiles full of hope of what their future in the 'golden country' holds.

Along the way, the pair meets Chauk in Chiapas in the south of Mexico. Though he is unable to speak Spanish, their mutual goals enable them to understand each other and become friends.

Juan, ambitious to realize his 'Golden dream'; Sara looking for a place to belong; Chauk who yearns to see 'snow'.

The three teenagers move forward step by step for their destination believing they will make it. But what awaits them is instead a tragic and grueling journey beyond imagination.

This movie is based on the many accounts of immigrants who have crossed borders in the hope that they will make it to America. It is told from their point of view.

Similar to our main characters, there is a never-ending stream of young unaccompanied children who cross into the U.S. illegally from El Savador, Guatemala, Honduras. According to UNHCR reports, more than 21,000 unaccompanied minors from those three countries were apprehended in the U.S. in 2013. Furthermore, there were almost 19,000 Mexican unaccompanied children apprehended in the same year.
These vulnerable children are often placed in a very precarious position and are in need of the protection of the international community.

See here for details.

The title of the film "La Jaula de Oro (The Golden Cage)" is based off a Mexican folksong of the same title.

Here is a small extract:

"La Jaula de Oro" Los Tigres del Norte

De que me sirve el dinero,
si estoy como prisionero,
dentro desta gran nacion,

cuando me acuerdo hasta lloro,

aunque la jaula sea de oro,
no deja de ser prision

What's money good for
If I live like a prisoner
In this great nation

When I'm reminded of this, I cry

Although this cage is made of gold
It's still a prison
