"The Beekeeper" is a documentary about a special encounter between two unique yet similar people.

Ibrahim had lost everything by the time he arrived at a completely foreign country. The only thing that remained was his burning passion for beekeeping and faith in those who surrounded him.
Even as Film Director Mano Khalil was forced to flee his home country, he continued to direct films with his passions and convictions.
Despite their loss, both the beekeeper Ibrahim and director Mano did not let go of their passions. Let us introduce you to these two special characters.

Ibrahim (Main character)

Surrounded by nature, Ibrahim lived with his wife and eleven children in Turkish Kurdistan in peace and with stability. But everything came crumbling down just before his adult children were able to start university.
As the conflict between Turkish Army and Kurdish Workers Party (Partiya Karkerên Kurdistan or PKK) suddenly intensified, Ibrahim's hometown became embroiled in the conflict and many innocent civilians were killed.

To Ibrahim, the most important things were his family, the beautiful nature of his homeland and his bees; all of which was cruelly taken from him.

With the Turkish Army's attention on him due to his children's involvement with the anti-government movement, Ibrahim felt his family would be in further and unacceptable danger if he stayed. He made the difficult decision to flee alone for the sake of his family's safety, and continued to live as a refugee for seven years.

His family who stayed behind were interrogated over and over again, and Ibrahim's prized Beehives were destroyed. Without the resources to make a living, Ibrahim's family is forced to live in difficult circumstances. To make matters worse Ibrahim's wife despairs at the news of her children's deaths in the conflict and takes her own life. Despite his best efforts, Ibrahim loses his four precious children, loving wife and home.

Ibrahim's life under the radar eventually leads him to a small town in Switzerland where he is registered as a refugee and embarks on a new life in a new and completely foreign environment.

Director Maho Khalill

"Humans have things they can lose. Family, wealth, home, freedom...  But dreams cannot be taken by anyone."

Born to a Kurdish family in Syria, Khalil questioned the discriminatory and unequal treatment of Kurds from a young age. Throughout his career he has created a number of films with Kurdish people's lives as the central theme in the hope that the world would realise the harsh realities of Kurdistan. Since then Khalill has been forced to flee Syria for Switzerland where he currently lives. Despite this, he never lost his passion and desires to show the world the truth through his films.

When Khalil met Ibrahim he saw a reflection of himself; the never-ending commitment to his passions despite all the difficulties life has thrown at them. Khalil says he felt compelled to tell the story of Ibrahim who never lost himself or his beliefs and continued to have faith in people no matter what struggles he faced.

Behind Ibrahim's kind eyes lies his past filled with tragedy and extraordinary courage.

This is a story following the new life being led by Ibrahim in a land foreign in culture and language, and the passions and convictions that he never lost.
