Through the eyes of the performers, staff and audience, WOODSTOCK IN TIMBUKTU vividly portrays the 'Desert Festival', a music festival held in Mali.
Discrimination has caused the Tuareg minority to flee to the Sahara Desert. For them the 'Desert Festival' is a celebration of the origins of the Tuareg cultural identity. Protesting against war, discrimination, and exploitation by multinational corporations, Bombino, a member of the Tuareg, steps on the stage and sings the praises of his people.

"Congratulations to Bombino from the Republic of Niger for replacing their Kalashnikovs with guitars!" cheer the crowd, expressing their wish for peace through music.
