This documentary uses four different perspectives to explore the evacuation of areas in the devastated region of Ishinomaki, Miyagi, after the 3.11 earthquake; School, Shelter, Family and Volunteers. From each perspective, we meet victims who faced significant obstacles and fought to overcome them.
The director, Stu Levy, is the founder of TOKYOPOP and is known for introducing Japanese Manga to the English-speaking world. Through relief work in the Tohoku Area of Japan after the 3/11 Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami, he witnessed the tenacity, the resilient spirit, the teamwork, and the self-sacrifice of the Japanese people which inspired him to produce this film.
Many talented Japanese artists lent their talents to the film maker, ranging from the words of Fukushima poet Ryoichi Wago, read by Sendai-born Kyoka Suzuki, which helps provide a narrative for the events unfolding on screen, to Tamio Okuda, who composed and performed the opening theme song. "Pray for Japan" will be screened at the 7th UNHCR Refugee Film Festival.
