(C)2011 climage
Each year, thousands of people in Switzerland are detained because they stay in the country illegally. They may be deprived of liberty for up to eighteen months before being deported on a "Special Flight".
Due to its status as a neutral state and misconceptions about its demography, Switzerland and immigration issues are rarely mentioned in the same sentence outside of the country itself. Domestically, these issues play a much larger role. In 2011, an initiative concerning the deportation of foreign criminals became a hot button issue which eventually garnered enough support to be approved, affecting the foreign community which makes up roughly 20% of the total population. This initiative sparked the director's interest in the conditions faced by those awaiting deportation. Viewers should also take note of the similar immigration concerns present in both Switzerland and Japan.
"Vol Spécial (Special Flight)", a film which accurately portrays the realities faced by those awaiting their departure, will be screened during the 7th Refugee Film Festival.
