Guided by Moussa, a musician and ex-rebel who was born in the valley of Asawagh on the border of Mali and Niger, this film retraces the recent history of the Tuaregs; a fragmented history made of suffering, wandering, revolt and injustice, but also of travel, comfort and hope.
The Tuaregs are a nomadic people spread across five States; Mali, Niger, Algeria, Libya, and Burkina-Faso. Since the 19th century, they have been fighting to preserve their cultural identity or "Toumast" as they say in their native language, Tamashek. While their goal remains the same, their means have recently changed from Kalashnikovs to Guitars.
"Toumast - Guitars and Kalashnikovs" is a documentary focusing on the Tuaregs at this historical turning point. Its Japanese premiere will take place during the 7th UNHCR Refugee Film Festival.
