In the northern French harbor of Le Havre, fate throws a young African refugee into the path of Marcel, a shoe shiner who enjoys a frugal life with his beloved wife. With innate optimism and the unwavering support of his community, Marcel stands up to officials doggedly seeking to deport the boy.
In addition to being the setting for this film, Le Havre is the site of Claude Monet's masterpiece "Impression, Sunrise", which helped give rise to the impressionist movement. As an apparent nod to the great artist, one of the characters in the film, a superintendent, is named Monet.
"Le Havre", winner of the 2011 Cannes Film Festival FIRPESCI prize, will be screened during the 7th UNCHR Refugee Film Festival.
